About Bertie:

Bertie is a medium-sized, male Border Collie X, aged 9 years old.

Hi, I’m Bertie. Also affectionately known as ‘Binkie.’

I’m a very loving and gentle 9-year-old border collie mix.

And, if there’s food around, I’m willing to do anything!

I’ll spin in circles for it or flop down and show my belly.

I live in New Plymouth with my mum and best friend, Barney, who you’ll also find here.

Mum rescued me from a horrible situation. People wrongly assumed I was a PUP because I was so malnourished.

Now, I’ve made up for lost time and FOOD is one of my greatest passions in life.

I’m a power eater, you see, AND a power chewer and power walker.

Makes me sound like a superhero, really.

Let me explain…

I love meat, fruit and veggies and I eat FAST, so Mum puts my food in a slow-feed bowl, so I’m forced to take my time.

I’m not a destructive chewer round the place, however, I’ll shred a toy you give me within minutes!

Give me a bone to knaw on and I’m the happiest chap though!

And I LOVE speeding along, going for my half hour power walk in the morning and at night, woohoo!

Those two walks are the highlight of my day and it’s good to get the joints moving.

You see, I’m very healthy but I do have a little arthritis starting, which I take Rimadyl for.

Mum told us she’s moving overseas for a year.

She’s hoping to find us a loving long-term foster home, where we can stay together – be safe happy and loved – till we can all be together again.

As Barney’s told you, both of us would be too tempted to live with free ranging chickens.

Cats and possums are out too!

Like Barney, I’m GREAT with people though – especially kids.

I love other dogs too – especially gentle with the little ones!

Yesterday, Barney and I went to the river together, down the road.

Barney took off for a swim on his own and I sat on the bank and watched, then I had a couple of drinks from the river and got my ankles wet.

We’re different, yet we’re the best of mates!

Barney just cruises, whereas sometimes, I get a little afraid of things.

I think thunder and lightning is scary.

I need my Thundershirt and calming reassurance from mum. She puts the TV on for me too – yet Barney doesn’t bat an eyelid!

And, before we go any further, it’s best I tell you the worst habit I have…

If there’s a bee or a wasp flying round, I WILL try and eat it.

Years ago, I investigated a wasp nest and got stung so many times.

Yet, to this day, I’ll still chomp a wasp when I see one!

It’s just lucky I’m not allergic!

I’m a pretty happy guy that asks for little in life.

If we’re outside, I’ll follow you round to keep an eye on what you’re doing.

Inside, I’ll snooze, while listening out for the sound of snacks!

Unlike Barney, I get a little scared when new people visit our home.

I’ll run to the gate and bark, with my hackles up. I LOOK scary but I’m honestly not!

Once a visitor talks to me, I’ll be rolling over and showing my tummy in no time!

Mum wanted me to let you know that I’m neutered, micro-chipped, worm and flea free and up to date with my vaccinations.

So, if you feel you have the ideal place for Barney and I to stay – where we’ll be happy and a part of things – please send an email and tell us a little about yourself and what you can offer us.
