About Charlie:
Charlie is a medium-sized, male Border Collie, aged 1 year old.
Description:Charlie is a one-year-old male, black and white, border collie x heading dog. He is fairly plain-eyed, although he does show some ‘eye’.
He was brought to me by a sheep farmer for ‘starting’ and training to be a farm dog.
After about a month, I discussed with the farmer, that Charlie was probably not ‘strong enough’ for the job as the farmer wanted a dog for mostly cattle work. I have continued to work with Charlie for two more months, as he is very keen to work with sheep, but he just needed time to build some confidence, and to learn to be calm around sheep. Charlie is still a bit immature and very high energy, so he needs a lot of exercise/work. However, he has improved greatly from where we started. He needs work beyond the training paddock now, and I am no longer mustering. In the right situation, I’m sure he could go on to be a handy little dog for somebody, as long as he isn’t put under too much pressure, too soon.
He is under good command (voice and whistle) for run-out, sides, stop, pull, and call-off. He doesn’t have a very strong pull on ‘heavy’ sheep. He also knows ‘Wait’, ‘Get Through’ and ‘Stay there’.
I have taken him with me on horse rides, and bicycle rides, on a quiet road and on farms.
Is Charlie used to cats? Don’t know.
Is Charlie toilet-trained? No.
Is Charlie used to stock? Yes.
Is Charlie used to chickens? Yes.
How well does Charlie get on with other dogs? Great.
Charlie lives in New Plymouth, .
A bit about Charlie’s personality:
Charlie is high energy, very friendly, and well socialised with other dogs. He can be a bit timid with strange men, and around cattle. He now knows to ignore ducks, chooks and bunnies, although he does still get interested if a bunny runs off in front of him. A stern warning stops him from taking any action. He knows to ignore my cat, but she knows not to run.
He has had no contact with children while with me, but I doubt he would be aggressive.
He is generally very clean in his kennel and does not bark in the kennel.
