About Cloud:
Cloud is a medium-sized, male Heading Dog, aged 6 years old.
Description:Hi there,
I’m reaching out to see if you might be able to help us rehome our dog, Cloud, or point us in the right direction.
This is a very difficult decision for our family. Cloud has been with me since my first year in New Zealand and is the offspring of my first two working dogs, so he is incredibly special to us.
Although he comes from working dog lines, he was never suited to farm work and became our much-loved pet. He is an extremely loyal and gentle dog — he doesn’t wander (even with open gates), is calm around livestock (sheep, chickens, deer) and cats, and is great with adults. He also loves the outdoors, is excellent on hikes, stays close, never barks, and is very good at finding deer after a shot, so he could suit a hunting home.
Cloud is desexed and has always been well cared for.
The reason we are looking to rehome him is due to his behaviour around young children. He is not aggressive at all, but he becomes too rough when excited — jumping, biting and scratching without meaning to — and this has led to a few accidental injuries with kids (ours and step-sisters). As a result, we feel he would be much better suited to a home without young children.
I want to be very clear that this decision has not been made lightly. Cloud has had training — he was started as a working dog, where jumping is not allowed, and we have also worked on his behaviour around children. The issue is not a lack of training, but rather that when he gets excited, he struggles to regulate himself. Being the only puppy in his litter, he likely missed out on learning some of those boundaries from littermates.
He is otherwise a wonderful dog and not a “problem dog” in any other setting. Our goal is not to pass on a problem, but to find him an environment that truly suits him, where he can live freely and safely. He has always been a free dog here — he has a dog house to sleep in, but he is free to go wherever he wants within our fenced area.
Cloud also has lupus, which occasionally affects his nose and eyes, especially in strong sun. However, it has been very manageable — he has not needed veterinary care in years, and we manage flare-ups with short courses of medication (honestly, I can’t remember the last time he needed it).
We love him deeply, and this is honestly heartbreaking for us. We just want to make sure he ends up in a home where he can thrive and be the happy, relaxed dog we know he is.
If your organisation might be able to help, or if you have any advice or contacts, we would be incredibly grateful.
Thank you so much for your time.
Kind regards,Helena
