About Tweed:
Tweed is a medium-sized, male Border Collie, aged 4 years old.
Description:Tweed is looking for a very specific home due to no fault of his own.
He was born, bred and raised by myself and due to a learning deficit (which isn’t apparent day to day) was not suitable for stock work so he stayed on with us as a pet. He is faultlessly trained in the core skills to live is a pet – crate trained, toilet trained, not a barker and has his set of basic commands which are generally faultless after a lot of work – sit, down, wait, recall, get up (ute), get in (walk behind). Being a country dog his lead skills could do with some work but he is generally easy to walk on lead and loves people.
Tweed is working bred out of my Tess by imported ISDS semen. He is a pedigree and registered border collie with DogsNZ. Microchipped and council registered. Neutered and very low shedding for a border collie.
He has travelled and camped extensively and knows the drill. Loves to run but is actually quite chill in the exercise department if you miss a day.
My husband frequently takes him out on adventures on his own and he is very relaxed, sticks around and not prone to wandering off. He just wants to be where you are.
No dog however is perfect, so here is the dirt.
— While he does get on with other dogs, he does find them overstimulating so would need a single dog home to keep him relaxed and in “normal” thresholds.
– He has Discoid Lupus which affects his nose only. He is currently on Prednisone which keeps his nose looking as per pictures. While DLE is not ideal, it does not shorten the dogs lifespan or make them ill. Management of DLE costs around $10 a month at its worst.
– We do not have cats or chickens so I could not guarantee him in that respect.
This is not an easy rehome. Tweed has been with us since birth however our other dogs all pick on him, most likely due to his constant over arousal and movement around them (they are all eye dogs with off switches) when they are trying to chill. Being constantly picked on is not fair to him nor would kennelling him be when he is used to being out all day and we know he has an awesome off switch when not around them.
Note: this is not an issue that could be mended by well meaning training as his learning deficit doesn’t allow the consistency particularly when in high arousal.
The ideal home for Tweed is as follows:
– single dog, no cats.
– older active person wanting an adventure companion or younger active person out there doing it. Must own your own home, preferably rural or semi.
– experienced with working breeds and the idiosyncrasies that are border collies.
– he will not be suited to doggy daycare, dog parks or city living.
– must be in Otago/Southland/Canterbury region as if things don’t work out I will be there to get him in a flash.
