Shes a super friendly dog with the sweetest nature — she loves people, kids, and basically anyone who’ll give her a pat! She’s got a big heart and just wants to be everyone’s best friend.

Django is a loveable, gentle giant. A 1 year old, entire male, longer coated Huntaway. He’s eager to please and incredibly loyal but too soft for work purposes. He would thrive in a rural home/ lifestyle block as a companion or family pet. He gets along well with other dogs and has great recall/ sit command. He is still very puppy like in his personality and a bit of a goofball, who can’t but make you smile. He has lived outdoors his whole life, so is not toilet trained. He has a whole lot of love to give and would make someone’s life a bit more complete.

🐾 Awooooo, dog lovers! 🐕💙

The RWD crew will be at the Hunterville Huntaway Festival this Saturday 1 November! Come along to meet some amazing retired working dogs, learn about their stories, and meet the team.

We’ll have plenty to chat about, plus cool merch, calendars and info on how you can help give our hard-working heroes the second life they deserve.

The Shemozzle is a fantastic event for fans of working dogs - it celebrates the incredible agility, intelligence, and endurance of Huntaway dogs while showcasing the skill and dedication of their handlers. It’s a chance to see these hardworking dogs in action, participating in a tough but fun challenge that embodies the spirit of rural community and the bond between farmers and their dogs. Plus, its a whole lot of fun perfect for families, friends, and dog lovers to gather and enjoy a day of organized chaos, mud, and memorable moments.

We can’t wait to see you there!

Crox is a huntaway beardie X, 15 months old, rescued from a local farmlet, part of a large litter from working parents, surplus to requirements.
She is very intelligent and learns fast. Very large amounts of energy. Doesnt bark unnecessarily. She is needing a farm/lifestyle block home where she can use all her excess energy and learn new things. She is very affectionate & loves to please. She is friendly with other dogs, amazing with children. Good on a lead, great recall off lead.

📌Our site operates to find the best possible retirement home for dogs in their glory years Negative comments are unhelpful, defeating our purpose 📌

Old soldier Chief is a 10 year old pig dog who is ready to retire.
He is physically sound but slowing down. Chief is quite the character, easy to have around, happy to just cruise. He is hairy with a short tail and a few war wounds from the years. Great with stock, children, chickens, cats, other dogs, people etc.
If youve got a great retirement home for Chief contact his owner via the link below:

Fletch is a very energetic and loyal, 4 year old male Kelpie. He absolutely loves running and needs to keep busy.
Fletch is trained in dry stock, well behaved around them, he is extremely savvy with cows as he is currently on a dairy farm.
Fletch is high energy and loves to go for adventures whether that is on the farm, to the river or beach. loves going possum hunting and would be best suited to somewhere where he gets lots of exercise and is not near any cats. 🤭

Johnny is a gorgeous boy with long legs and a big heart. 1 year old. Currently with the Whakatane SPCA team who think he may be a lurcher/collie mix but this is just their best guess.
He is friendly and smart and will make a great companion for someone with an active lifestyle. He is playful with other dogs and may be useful for working stock as he likes to try and herd the volunteers when they walk him.
Alternatively Johnny would love any other job if it meant getting out and about doing something.

Flite is a medium sized, 12-year-old, tri-coloured heading dog. He is very good-natured and still fit and active but unfortunately, he is now quite deaf at distance. Flite is ready to retire from farm work and would make a fabulous pet as he is toilet trained, gets on with other dogs ok and is wonderful with children. The place where he had been working is now sold and he is ready for his new home ASAP.

🐾 Meet Sam – the Lovable Retired Huntaway! 🐾

Sam is one of our foster dogs who is looking for his forever home. Are you looking for a loyal best mate who’ll happily follow you around and love you unconditionally? Meet Sam, a gentle 9-year-old Huntaway with a heart of gold. 💛

Sam’s enjoying his well-earned retirement after years of farm life, and now he’s looking for a quiet forever home to call his own. He’s easy-going, affectionate, and happiest just being near his person.

✅ Great with other dogs
✅ Good with chickens (though he might “collect” the odd egg 😅)
✅ Used to stock
✅ Enjoys a calm, relaxed lifestyle

He’d love a home with older kids or adults only, where he can be part of the family and enjoy a peaceful life.

📍 Fostered in Levin

See more information about Sam and apply to adopt him here: https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/dogs-for-adoption/sam-levin-rwdnz-foster-dog/

🐾Could Scruff be your new best friend?

Shes a large, female Huntaway, aged 7 years old, who is full of energy at the start of the day when getting out of the kennel and after a couple minutes of stretching she is happy enough to lounge around, carefree but also happy enough to do some work when it comes to it. Shes a very happy girl.

Shes an 11 year old heading dog, who has worked her whole life on steep hill country. She was hand reared from 4 days old so loves people. Her boss has had a life changing injury and she has been out of work for 8 months. She needs a loving retirement home and maybe some light work. She has a limp from an old injury but has no other ongoing medical issues -apart from carrying a bit of weight at present!

🧡Sarge is a very smart, independent dog. He loves training and going for runs. He has shown herding abilities but his owner has not had the opportunity to see if he could work - it could be a possibility. He would benefit from a home on a lifestyle block, or a very active pet home.

💛Bruiser is just a big smooch, he loves going for runs although he is slower than his brother. He absolutely loves swimming. He has a good bark but in his previous home he didn’t make it as a working dog, a lifestyle block could work. He’s just a big lovable goof.
