About Arlo:
Arlo is a large, male Heading Dog X, aged 8 years old.
Description:8-year-old heading dog looking for a slower, steady pace of life. Our family adopted Arlo from the SPCA 4 months ago. His early history is a bit of a mystery, but he is simply such a great dog. He is fully desexed, microchipped, and currently registered with the Waimakariri District Council.
Please note: Name was changed when adopted 4 months ago. We request that his new family keeps his name the same.
He loves children! He lives with two kids aged 7 and 11, and has been fantastic with all the visiting children who have smothered him with affection. He is very gentle and well-behaved around them.
When it comes to other animals, he is perfectly fine walking past horses, sheep, ducks, and birds without a worry. He doesn’t react at all when walking past houses with barking dogs, and has had good interactions with smaller dogs.
When we adopted him, we planned to give him all the time and focus he deserved. However, our circumstances have unexpectedly changed. My partner recently secured a new job requiring 12–13 hour workdays, which we never anticipated. With these intense hours, we simply cannot provide the daily companionship and stimulation a heading dog needs to thrive. It is a massive shame to be rehoming him, but we love him dearly and know this selfless choice is what is best for him.
He needs a quiet retirement home, ideally in Canterbury where he hang out and stretch his legs in a secure yard. Because of his age, he is not available to go to a working farm as a working dog.
He is a fantastic companion, but requires an owner who understands breed boundaries. He needs to be a lead-only dog when out in public spaces and is not a candidate for off-lead dog parks. We had one stressful incident with another dog where he became reactive. Because his full history is unknown, he needs a responsible owner who is happy to stick to on-lead walks, quiet trail strolls, or pacing around private property.
We are fully committed to finding him the right fit to ensure his next home is a great match. We will coordinate with the new owner to officially transfer his microchip details via the NZ Companion Animal Register (NZCAR) and update his registration details with the Waimakariri District Council.
Bonus: We have purchased high-quality gear for him over the last 4 months (including a secure run, bedding, and harness etc) that we are very happy to sell to his new adopters to help him settle in with familiar items.

A bit about Arlo’s personality:
He is incredibly loyal, intelligent, energetic and focused. He is a well-mannered companion around the house. In fact, most of the time, he will only come inside when he is explicitly told he can! He sleeps soundly in a crate at night. He also sits, shakes hands, drops, and will even “speak” on command when at home. On walks, his sit and come commands are excellent, and my recall is very good.
He loves to play with the kids in the yard, chasing around a soccer ball.
