About Joey:

Joey is a large, male Huntaway X, aged 8 years old.

Description:

Hi,
My name is Louise, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my partner’s family as we are needing to rehome his dog, Joey.
Following the heartbreaking loss of my partner’s mum in January after a rapid and unexpected cancer diagnosis, and the subsequent sale of the family home, Joey’s circumstances have changed significantly. He is currently being cared for at a rural property with Daniel’s dad, however this is only a temporary arrangement. Daniel’s dad will be moving to Australia, so we are hoping to find Joey the right forever home by the end of August-early September.
Joey is an 8-year-old Huntaway cross, weighing approximately 45 kg. He is a true country dog who after being adopted from the SPCA at 1 year old, spent his life on a rural lifestyle property with plenty of space to roam. He isn’t suited to suburban living and would thrive on a rural property or lifestyle block where he has room to explore, keep watch over his surroundings, and enjoy being outdoors. While he spends most of his time outside, he also enjoys coming inside for a comfortable place to rest.
Joey is a loyal, affectionate boy who loves attention, especially a good brush and a butt scratch. He forms strong bonds with his people and naturally takes his role as family protector seriously.
He has grown up around cats, dogs, chickens, and livestock and has always been great with other animals. He has loved running alongside us when bringing sheep up to the yards. He’s certainly got the bark and enthusiasm for farm life, although he has never had formal working-dog training.
We believe Joey would be happiest in a home that offers:
A rural property or lifestyle block.
No young children.
Plenty of space to explore and be part of daily life.
An experienced owner who understands large, loyal working breeds.
Joey is desexed, up to date with his vaccinations and veterinary care, and has a homemade kennel that can go with him. He is currently located in Oamaru/Weston (North Otago), and we are happy to travel anywhere within the South Island for the right home.
I’m hoping your organisation may be able to assist us with finding Joey the right forever home, or offer any advice on the best way to go about rehoming him.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read about Joey. We appreciate any help or guidance you can offer and are happy to provide any additional information if needed.

A bit about Joey’s personality:

Joey is a friendly, affectionate and loyal dog who loves being part of the family. Despite his size, he’s a real softie who enjoys relaxing with his people and is always happy to soak up attention. Joey has a calm, easy-going nature and thrives on companionship.

Having spent his life on a lifestyle block, Joey enjoys having space to explore and would be happiest in a home with a secure section or rural property. He’s a smart dog who knows basic commands including sit, lie down, stay, paw, and “way ya go” when it’s time to move along. One of his favourite things is going for rides on the back of the ute.

For the past five years, Joey has shared his home with his feline best friend. The two were inseparable, often getting up to mischief together and enjoying plenty of rough-and-tumble play before curling up nearby afterwards.

Joey takes his role as the family’s guardian seriously and is naturally alert to what’s happening around his home. He can be a little wary of new people at first, but once he gets to know you, you’ll have a loyal best friend who’ll happily lean in for pats and make you his official bum-scratcher.

With the people he knows and trusts, Joey forms strong bonds and is a loving, devoted companion who will make a wonderful addition to the right home.
