Oh happy happy dog!! This is Comet, a 2-year-old Catahoula x Huntaway with a beautiful mix of energy, playfulness, and heart. He’s ready for his forever home. He’s shown natural interest in herding cows on a small lifestyle block before, so there may be potential for farm training. He would also do well on a lifestyle property where he can run free, be mentally stimulated, and be part of the action.Contact his owner via the link below:https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/dogs-for-adoption/comet-napier/

Miss is a small, friendly dog but a little bit shy. Shes a huntaway X, 7 years old who has been a handy dog on the farm, kept as a spare and used when needed. She will bark at stock. Miss is sick of just being the spare and would love a new forever home with a loving family of her own. Great for a pet or small life style block, likes room to run around.Contact her owner below:https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/dogs-for-adoption/miss-waipukurau/

Chops broken heart, part two: Update 😍 Thankyou to everyone who has liked, shared commented and especially for the donations - we’ve raised enough to pay Chop’s surgery bills! When we took Chop into foster we had no idea of his heart defect, and cases like his test all our nerve. His likely positive outcome meant he was a good candidate for surgery and it broke all our hearts to know that without it he had months or just weeks to live. But raising $4150 to pay for treatment was a big call - we felt this community had our (his) back. The team @Massey pulled our boy through a thoracotomy - open chest surgery. Chop is now recovering well with his amazing foster mum Michelle, hes full of life and just being your average kid on a sugar high Huntaway puppy . You can still donate and if we exceed money needed to pay for Chop all funds will be used for vet bills: https://buy.stripe.com/3cs5loeT16S9eoU28bor direct to: The Retired Working Dogs NZ Charitable Trust 03-0725-0001027-000.For a receipt, put your email address in reference details for bank transfer or email us treasurer@retiredworkingdogs.org.nz

😢Hankie alert! And help needed 🤞🏼💔Chops broken heart, part one: Chop came into our care at 6 months, showing no Huntaway drive to work. At a routine vet appointment for vaccinations, a grade 6 heart murmur. was discovered. 😭The team Tararua Veterinary Services got us in touch with Massey University and we were horrified to find he had been born with a PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosis) congenital heart defect. Left untreated this would cause excess blood to flow to the lungs and potentially heart failure and sudden death. Chop was given a life expectancy of maximum 6 months if left untreated, with the very real chance he could die suddenly. Spoiler alert - we couldnt let that happen, there’s a happy ending and will share part 2 of Chops story on Sunday. For now, we are facing a vet bill of $4150. Can you help us: https://buy.stripe.com/3cs5loeT16S9eoU28bor ping us any $ you can spare direct to: The Retired Working Dogs NZ Charitable Trust 03-0725-0001027-000.

|To our amazing community|So many of you have got involved in our work recently, sharing comments online, and we thank you for that.It comes up a lot where people are asking why do farmers rehome their dogs that have worked a long time for them. Shaming farmers for rehoming their dogs needs to stop. We need farmers to feel safe to reach out to rehome their dogs, creating a great outcome and a lovely home for any retired working dog, for any reason. The negativity is also pretty tough on our volunteers managing unkind comments while working hard to rehome. We LOVE the support we have and this community - we hope we can all continue to work constructively to see more RETIRED WORKING DOGS 🐾 To find retired working dogs for adoption: https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/dogs-for-adoption/To donate to help us meet costs: https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/donate-and-support/
