Shep is hanging out with us at the Fair today. He's a lovely old boy.
This is Duke aka Logan/Rogue who was adopted through us nearly 2 years ago. He’s living his best life, competing at agility and loving it. 😍
Welcome to the RWD foster family Larry! This handsome boy has made a huge journey up from the deep South to Feilding, where he will get checked out by the awesome team at Totally Vets Feilding before we look to find him his forever home. Larry, who is only 5, was purchased as a working dog, but arrived very lame. It turns out he has an old injury to his leg, and is no longer able to do his job. Lucky for him, his owner has gone above and beyond to secure his future retirement <3 So many people have been involved in getting this boy to us, and we are so grateful.A huge thank you to the lovely team at PT’s PET Transport Interisland North-South NZ who saw him safely to Chch (at a discounted rescue price <3 ), to Anna for collecting him and spoiling him until he could catch his next ride, to Morgan from Very Important Paws 🐾 Chauffeur, for being an absolute legend, and transporting him from Chch to Palmerston North at no cost <3 and to Susan his new foster Mama. We are also so grateful to his owner, who has been amazing to deal with, and Katrina from Harmony & Hope Animal Rescue Trust who organised his inter-island ride with Morgan. We'll keep you all updated on how he gets on!
UPDATE: Buzz has found a ride! Huge thanks to Jo for taking this cute little hitchhiker, and to Nicole for overnighting him ❤️🐾Buzz has finally found himself a lovely new home! Now he just needs to get there...If anyone is travelling between Masterton and Waiouru on Tuesday the 23/3 and could give Buzz a lift, his new Mum would be super grateful. He can be collected in Waiouru between 11am-12pm.We have the ride from Waiouru to Te Awamutu sorted ❤️🐾Please contact Anne directly if you can help at all (she is not watching FB)0274 575 111 Thank you!!
This is why we do what we do. Lovely message and photo this morning: "Hi guys I just want to thank you for what you're doing. We found our beautiful girl pip on this page and picked her up 1 year ago yesterday. She is the most beautiful natured dog and we feel so lucky to have found her."
Thanks for visiting Retired Working Dogs! ⭐ If you are rehoming your dog, please make sure you do due diligence with regards to the new owner - we recommend references and a property check - either in person or via video. If you are running out of time and need to re-home your dog asap, please get in touch as we may be able to help with a foster home.
If you're at the Martinborough Fair, head to Kansas Street. This is the lovely Jill and Belle hanging out with Nat.
We will be at the Martinborough Fair with a stall tomorrow. Pop by to find out more about what we do. (The Fair organisers ask you to leave your dogs at home as it's usually very crowded). We're looking forward to seeing you..

❤️ Don’t forget about our gorgeous 2021 calendars for sale on our website! Baxter (featuring as Mr August) was a pig dog rescued from the pound. He’s a big happy goof ball, and his new owners say he makes friends everywhere he goes!https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/news/2021-calendar-now-shipping/(Photo credit Belinda Pratt - Photographer)
Dear ol’ Tex - Mr December - retired from the hills to a smaller farm and taught his new owners all there is to know about moving stock! Tex is pictured second from the right. His favourite thing was to give the other dogs pointers and wait by the bike for the next job.Sadly Tex has passed away since this photo - we all send our thoughts and sympathy to his lovely family 💖 he was a very special boy and had the very best family to retire with. https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/news/2021-calendar-now-shipping/
Handsome Earl back in for another splint change after his op! The splint is gradually getting straightened to apply gentle pressure to extend his leg. From only 90 degrees of extension before his op, to 145 degrees now! Much closer to the normal 180 degrees 🥰
Skye's working life ended when an injury meant that one of her legs had to be amputated. Skye has embraced her life as a pet with enthusiasm and having only three legs does not slow her down!
We have had amazing support of our 2021 Calendar so far ❤️They make amazing Christmas presents and we have had great feedback from the ones already received.https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/news/2021-calendar-now-shipping/Kayla had her old cat Moosey helping to prepare today's calendars for postage (and this is only half of the orders) 🥳
Alfie is another calendar dog. He joined the Martinborough Manor RWD team earlier this year after he decided that a working life was not for him although he does enjoy quad bike rides! He also enjoys going out last thing at night with his owner to check that all the other animals are safely tucked up in bed.
Ms January Cloud had her working life come to an end at a young age when a kick from a cow damaged one of her legs. Thankfully, she is still able to enjoy long walks and play with the other dog in the family. RWD calendars can be purchased online at https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/product/2021-calendar/Photo: Belinda Pratt Photography
We'd like to introduce you to the dogs that feature in our 2021 calendar. Cover girl Minty was a adopted at 12 years of age after a long, successful career working sheep. She is living out her retirement with a young family that loves her humble attitude and the love that she gives them. Calendars can be purchased in our shop https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/product/2021-calendar/

If you are new to the page, please have a read of our “About” section - it’ll let you know why we do what we do, and why the farmers advertising on here are doing what they believe is best for their dogs ... so please go easy on them!! And guess what, even if they look sad in photos, it doesn’t mean they actually are.... this girl is certainly very pleased with her lifestyle!!!
We were sent this lovely pic of handsome Odi settling in to his new home, where his new family love him to bits already! We love seeing updates of these dogs in their new homes 🧡🐾
UPDATE: thank you so much that was crazy fast! A lovely foster home has been found for King ❤️🐾Posting on behalf of a follower:Urgent foster home needed for a young working dog.King is a 14 month old heading dog, he’s partially through his training. His owner has lost his shepherding job and is heading down South for a month to try and find another. The rest of his dogs have somewhere to stay during this time, but King needs to find a foster home before Wednesday 1st July. All food will be provided by owner. King is current with his vaccinations but is not castrated. King is good with other dogs, has not been around cats/kids or chooks but is a nice natured boy. Because he is young and keen he needs someone with a firm hand or he may end up rounding the sheep up without being asked.King is currently based in Taupo, his owner heads down on the Wednesday to Chch. Could transport him down further on his way.
Sorry everyone! We’re having some technical difficulties with our website at the moment, but our IT wizards aren’t onto it and we should be back up and running soon.
Sigh... sometimes this feels like Groundhog Day but seems it’s time to say this again. This IS NOT the forum to have a go at farmers. The farmers who advertise with us are trying to find loving homes for their dogs. They care about them. The alternative is to be left alone all day while the team is out at work, or to be put to sleep. Not every farmer or shepherd is allowed or able to keep multiple dogs at home. Abusing farmers will mean they won’t advertise with us and then the dogs won’t find lovely new homes. So before you write a comment, please STOP and THINK.
ODI-WELLINGTONUPDATE: Odi is out on trial at a new home ❤️Are you looking for a fun loving adventure buddy? A running companion or an agility dog?Odi is looking for an active, experienced home that can help him discover his place in the world. Originally off a farm, Odi did not make the cut as a working dog and has since been rehomed twice. He is lovely but has not quite found the right fit for him yet!Odi is now in foster with RWD in Wellington, and is learning new things daily. He has a very nice nature but needs an owner who can help realise his potential. Here's a little bit about him:*Odi has had some training but needs further work*He has quite an interest in rounding up stock, birds and rabbits. Although he has not been around cats, we suspect he will also be quite interested in them. He either needs a home without these distractions, or with an owner who is experienced and confident in training.*Odi is house trained, good in the car, and can easily spend the night inside!*Odi is fantastic with children and loves people. *He has lovely manners and doesn't jump all over you.*His lead work is improving and he would make a good running buddy for someone!*Odi is very good with other dogs and would really like to find a home with a playful companion. He can be quite enthusiastic when he meets new dogs.*Odi is very obedient and keen to please, he just needs an owner who will give clear and consistent commands. He is quite a big strong dog.*An incredibly sweet and lovely dog that just wants to be by your side, so happy to see you when in the morning or when you get home. Responds really well to positive rewards and just wants to please.Odi will go to his new home vaccinated, de-sexed, microchipped and registered. Adoption fees apply to help towards these costs. For more information, please check out his website ad:https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/dogs-for-adoption/odi-wellington/
BAXTER-MANAWATUUPDATE: Baxter is out on trial at a new home ❤️Baxter is a 1 year old mix breed (pigdog) who is looking for an active family to call his own. This boy just loves people, he really wants to please. Baxter is good with other dogs and would be fine for older children (he is a bit bouncy for little ones).Baxter does require some decent fencing as he can pop over standard fencing if the mood takes him (or you leave him alone).Due to his energy, Baxter would be best suited to a home with some space to run and the ability to keep him busy. He would love another young dog to keep him company, and does prefer to have people around. For more information, please check out his album here:https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/?s=baxter
LUCY-OHAKUNE***UPDATE: Lucy is out on trial at a new home ❤️Beautiful Lucy has been waiting for her forever home for some time now! This kind natured pup would be the best addition to any family with children and cats, as she is wonderful with both. She loves other dogs and would really like a home with a companion to play with (she currently lives with Rowdy) Lucy would also prefer not to be left alone all day while you are at work, so having a dog as company would help with that.We have taken Lucy to functions and she has just shone like the star she is. So gentle and laid back for such a young girl. While she was bred to be a pigdog, she has never hunted as her and her sister were found on the side of the road at a young age.Lucy has been around all sorts of stock and is not interested in them. Being a puppy she will still chew sometimes or dig holes out of boredom, but this is a very normal behaviour.Honestly just the best little dog.For more information, please check out her album: https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/dogs-for-adoption/lucy-ohakune/
ROWDY-OHAKUNEUPDATE: Rowdy is out on trial at a new home ❤️This big, handsome, happy boy is looking for his next adventure. 2.5 year old Rowdy didn't male the cut as a working dog, but he would be a fantastic addition to an active family. Rowdy loves everyone. He is fine with kids, cats, chooks, stock. He is a big bouncy boy and so probably would suit older children better. If they liked to throw sticks or balls then Rowdy could keep them busy all day!Rowdy is fine being an inside or outside dog, he is house trained. Rowdy would probably suit a country lifestyle better as he does have a big voice and he will bark if he is excited. This boy also loves to swim, so access to a river or beach would make him very happy. For more information about Rowdy, please check out his website ad: https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/dogs-for-adoption/rowdy-ohakune/
BUTCH AND MASON-MASTERTONThese two lovely oldies are looking for a wonderful family retirement home together. Both boys have been working their whole lives, and now deserve some well earned TLC. Butch (huntaway) still considers himself a big deal as a working dog, but he is very deaf and getting quite arthritic these days, so is better suited to a slower life. He would happily bark at a handful of sheep every now and then for fun though.Mason (heading) has fully retired himself and would really just like lots of quiet gentle attention. Both boys are on medication daily for their arthritis (this is not a huge expense) and other than being deaf to varying degrees depending on the situation, they are both in good health for their ages (roughly 10-11 years). They are the best of buddies and rely on each other, so we need them to go to homes together. Butch is quite pushy with his love and very enthusiastic so he sometimes gets himself in trouble with other dogs as he steals all the attention. Mason is a quiet soul who prefers a calmer approach. Butch would be fine with children who are used to big dogs, Mason is very gentle but would probably prefer older children who are calm and won't get up in his face. They are both vaccinated up to date and have had all their outstanding health needs take care of, but due to their age we cannot castrate them. Both dogs are fine with stock, chooks, donkeys and other dogs. Mason will bark at cats but doesn't chase them. Butch is oblivious to them.If you would like to know more about these golden oldies, please check out their album on our website https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/dogs-for-adoption/butch-and-mason-masterton/Or contact Natalie on 027 453 0622 (please ring rather than txt)
ZIGZAG-ManawatuZigzag is a 6-7 year old male beadie who is looking for a wonderful family home! This boy loves people, and is good with children. He ignores sheep and chickens. Has not met any cats in our care but should be ok with them. Zigzag gets on well with the 5 other dogs in his foster home, but he does not like to meet other dogs when he is out and about. We think the best home for Zigzag would be on a lifestyle block or possibly a dairy farm, as a pet for the family. That way he can have other dogs at home to play with but has no need to go out for walks where he will meet dogs on the lead. He is not an aggressive dog but he is reactive and will bark and bark if he meets new dogs away from home. He has chased another dog at a dog park. Apart from this, Zigzag is the nicest boy, he is quite happy being inside or outside, loves his cuddles and really enjoys playing with the ball. He is currently a little on the heavy side but this is being addressed in his foster home! For more information, please check out his album on our website https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/dogs-for-adoption/zigzag-wellington/Or contact Natalie on 027 453 0622 (please ring rather than txt)
CLOUD-MANAWATUUPDATE: Cloud is out on trial at a new home ❤️This pretty little girl came to us after a kick from a cow ended her station career. Cloud's leg has been repaired, and although she is recovering well, she will not be up to working a big hill country station.Cloud is a 6 month old female heading dog, she has had no formal training as such but was starting to learn when her injury happened. We would consider a working home for her on a smaller block, but equally she would make a fantastic pet for an active family.Cloud is great with children, other dogs, cats and stock. She does eye the pet rabbits in their cage, but has made no move to hurt them.Cloud has a really sweet nature and everyone who meets her falls in love. She would really like a home with a family where she can get the gentle but regular exercise that she needs and have the company of another dog during the day. For more information about Cloud, please check out her website listing here: https://retiredworkingdogs.org.nz/dogs-for-adoption/cloud-manawatu/
❤️ to keep some smiles going post a pic of your RWD enjoying their self isolation!
