About Maggie:

Maggie is a medium-sized, female Hunting – Pig Dog, aged 8 years old.

Description:

Hi, I’m Maggie. I’m a simply lovely 8-year-old female pig hunting dog, living in Nelson.

And my favourite food in the world is mutton – YUM!

Wild pork is just not for me.

In case you’re curious, I’m 25 kilo and I’m part greyhound, cattle dog and boxer – a beautiful combination. I am VERY gentle natured.

And I have a funny looking smile.

You see, when I was younger, a pig ripped my mouth at the corner, so I look a little like The Joker, on one side.

That’s ok though. My owner says my crooked smile makes me special – a little more distinctive.

He says I really am the easiest girl to have around.

Except when it comes to taking my worming tablets!

No matter what extravagant piece of meat my owner hides the pill in, I’ll ALWAYS detect it’s there.

I’ll be chewing away happily, then I get this look on my face, as if to say, “Are you trying to POISON me?!”

Then, I’ll hold the food in my mouth for ages; swallow the meat and spit out a sloppy pill.

After many attempts, we do get there in the end.

Sadly, I limp around a lot these days.

You see, I’ve worked extremely hard over the years, and I don’t have the best mobility now in my front elbow and shoulder joints.

At 5.30am, when my owner and the doggy team head out hunting, I must stay behind. This makes me feel sad and then I cry.

My owner hates having to exclude me. He just doesn’t want my elbows to get sore.

That’s why he’s hoping to find me a loving new PET home.

I ask for so little in life. I’m a very chilled out and relaxed girl.

I’d be happy just moseying round someone’s yard in town, getting tummy rubs, and following the sun.

You see, when the yellow stuff’s out, I’ll happily bake, in the warmth, all day long.

In fact, my owner worries I’ll COOK out there.

He has to tell me, “Maggie, go sit in the shade.”

Then I walk over and lie under a tree. See, I’m a pretty intelligent girl!

I currently live with a cat and I’ve never shown any interest in him but I’ve never lived indoors and shared house with one.

I’ve never been in a home without doggy company. I’ve lived with females and males and we all get along great.

My owner thinks I’d be happy sharing my home or living solo is fine too.

I’m not overly keen on little toy breeds though.

I don’t tend to like them rushing up in my face.

But I absolutely love little pups.

You see, a few years back, I had a litter myself, and I was an excellent mother.

When I’m playing with young dogs, I become a pup myself again!

And then there’s my love of people.

I will bark if a stranger comes to my home, to alert my owner someone’s there, but I’m otherwise a big cuddle bug round humans.

I’ll come over to you and drop on my back, hoping for a tummy scratch.

My owner did want me to let you know that I’m not spayed.

He’s happy to trial me, in my new home, for a few weeks, to make sure you and I are the right fit.

So, if you’re looking for a very gentle and sweet natured girl – whose just happy cruising and asks for so little – please consider opening your heart to me.
